Modern Day Algebra By: Devon Freeland
ALGEBRA TODAY
Algebra in today’s standards is a changing topic, one that is always being improved and revised. The amount of things that we have achieved today using algebra is amazing, and all very recently. Modern algebra really consists of different ways of teaching, learning, and spreading this wonderful skill. Algebra has really affected the human race more than anything. It has changed the way that we live and the way that we function. It changed business, by creating new methods for records, and databases. The technology world was changed aswell; microprocessors use basic algebra on a huge scale to create extremely complex computer system.
Many quotes apply to this topic, including one from “Mathematics.” By Britannica: “There are two major divisions of algebra and mathematics, pure, and applied.” This means that the math is real, used, or not changed. Meaning, pure algebra is math not affected or warped. Applied algebra is when the information is changed to fit to you. Another is from “Algebra.” By Britannica: “Mathematics and algebra are very pervasive in modern life, life baking a cake or building a house.” This quote is very deep, it tells the reader that algebra today is very difficult, but in the end, you will be proud of what you have done, or learned. Finally, from “Teens Thrilled with online summer school.” By Adam Golick: “These online algebra classes have been a blessing.” This quote is important, because what this kid said tells a lot about modern algebra and what is being done to teach it properly. These children are shaping our country based on this math, they need to be taught it properly.
Here, paraphrased sections are shown in paragraph form. Here is one, from “Algebra.” By Compton’s Britannica, page 1:
Algebra today is studied in the lower grades as well as in high schools and colleges. This relates to the question by telling of the many new ways that we are adapting to teach our increasingly younger and younger children to do this kind of math. Also, From “Mathematics.” By Compton’s Britannica, page 3: The affect on parents is shown; Parents are aware about the changes occurring in mathematics. They know that algebra is much more needed than it used to be, as jobs increasingly become more difficult to find, they more increasingly need to find people better taught with math. This relates because of its relevance to the topic, because changes with economy are very important to the future of algebra. Finally, From “Teens Thrilled with online summer school.” By Adam Golick Page 2: Teens are so used to the internet that it becomes an easy way for them to learn. This really reinforces the answer to our question, because it really shows the depth of the new teaching of algebra. Educators are using tools that are not controllable from school, like the internet at home, and using it to teach kids.
